Horse-Friendly Old Camp In Kosciuszko Now Better Than Ever

Horse yards at Old Camp campground in Kosciuszko National Park’s Currango Plain are in fine fettle for a busy summer thanks to the efforts of staff at the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).

NPWS Ranger for the Murrumbidgee Area Megan Bowden said the original horse yard lasted more than 30 years and after this major reconstruction, the new yards should have a long future. “After consultation with horse riding groups and other campground users we made improvements like dividing the original horse yard into two, planting shade trees, and installing another toilet,” Ms Bowden said. “We have replaced all the steel posts, strainers and wire, and installed tape which horse riders can electrify both to secure their horses and to run dividers if they want to make smaller yards.” Ms Bowden said all campers including those with horses would benefit from the improvements, which would also help conserve the surrounding environment. “We’ve improved signage to protect sensitive areas and we have plans for additional drainage works and rabbit control. “Old Camp is one of seven campgrounds in northern Kosciuszko for vehicle assisted horse riders and it offers beautiful day rides to Oldfields Hut, Old Currango, Cooleman Plain and Blue Water Holes. “We are planning a working bee shortly at another horse camp, Bullocks Campground, with volunteers from Kosciuszko Brumby and Horse Camp Conservationists.” For information about camping at Old Camp, also known as Gurrangorambla Camp and Old Snowy Camp, contact the Tumut Region Visitor Centre on 6947 7025 or visit the NPWS website.
